Welcome to APARU!
What is APARU? PDF Print E-mail

APARU is the Association of Argentine Professionals in the United Kingdom, a non-profit organization registered under the Central Registry of Charities of England and Wales.

APARU provides direct support to organizations in Argentina which are mostly, small, rather invisible and lack access to regular financial sources, but they outstand for their strong social compromise to improve wellbeing, health and education of the poorest, most vulnerable and often neglected populations in Argentina. By bringing together the Argentine and other UK residents engaged in sciences, finance, medicine, arts, technology, law and other areas of knowledge, APARU offers a unique platform that promotes both, professional discussion, exchange and expression of ideas, as well as fundraising initiatives for projects in Argentina.

Prestigious international Prize for leader of organization sponsored by APARU - Madres de Ituzaingo PDF Print E-mail

We are delighted and proud to announce that Sofía Gatica, the founder and leader of Mothers of Ituzaingó, which is one of the social organizations that APARU sponsored and helped in Argentina, has been awarded the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize, the world’s largest prize (US$ 150,000) honouring grassroots environmentalism.

Sofía Gatica is one of six grassroots leaders from around the world who received the prize in recognition of her courageous and successful efforts to protect her community health and environment. APARU wishes to congratulate Sofía Gatica for this magnificent achievement.

Ituzaingó is a very poor neighborhood located in the outskirts of the city of Córdoba with highest than average incidence of cancer. The Mothers organization helps ill people of all ages and also works to make other sectors recognize the seriousness of the problem. In this case, most cancer cases have a relationship with the use of banned endosulfan components in pesticides employed in nearby soya fields.

APARU donations between 2007 and 2009 helped provide health assistance to the diseased (e.g., from buying medicine and paying for transportation to hospitals to achiwring orthopedic beds). Furthermore, APARU provided continued advice to the Mothers on becoming an independent registered NGO in Argentina.

The prize achievement of Mother of Ituzaingó is testimony of both, that you as member of APARU can contribute to make good things happen and a demonstration of the commitment of APARU Executive Committee.

You will find interesting comments and interviews online on the Prize. Particularly, you may wish to look at  http://www.goldmanprize.org/ and http://www.goldmanprize.org/recipient/sofia-gatica

We thank you for your continued support and encourage you to keep it up .

Argentine top RAICES AWARD to UK Professor J C Kaski PDF Print E-mail

We are delighted to share with you the wonderful news that Professor Juan Carlos Kaski, Head of the Cardiovascular Sciences Research Centre at St George’s Hospital, London and former member of the Advisory Board of APARU has been awarded the prestigious RAICES prize.

The top RAICES award was set up by Argentina’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation to honour scientists for their own work and major contribution in science, as well as for promoting Argentine scientists and research and education practices internationally.

Professor Kaski was chosen this year for his extensive research in the field of cardiovascular sciences, which has given him an international reputation, and for helping forge research links between Argentine universities and St George’s University of London, as well as other UK institutions.

Incidentally, the RAICES prize was awarded to him for the work that Professor Kaski presented in his brilliant and enjoyable talk "Investigación en Cardiología: Un Viaje por el Mundo de las Preguntas sin Respuestas" organized by APARU and the Argentine Embassy back in March 2008.

On behalf of myself and of the Association of Argentine Professionals in the UK, we warmly congratulate Juan Carlos for yet another impressive achievement along his trajectory through the world of questions without answers.
